Custom cars shown off at Detroit’s Blessing of the Lowriders

MIâ?? Cars bounced their way down Lawndale Street in Southwest Detroit for the 18th annual Blessing of the Lowriders on Sunday.

The unique Detroit tradition, held this year at Grace in Action church, brought custom car owners and their families out to have their rides “blessed” before the start of cruising season.

The event was more than a gathering of car lovers.

Break dancers performed on one side of the parking lot as a DJ on the opposite side spun a mix of traditional Hispanic music and current hits.

“What’s powerful about it is that everyone is coming and being themselves and doing what they do,” said organizer Erik Howard, director of Young Nation, which sponsored the event featuring the USO car club, the Good Times Car Club, Detroit’s Cumbia Poder and Motor City Street Dance Academy.
