Detroit fireworks show promises to be biggest yet

The 58th annual Ford Fireworks will take place Monday on the Detroit River, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever, according to Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Co., the Detroit nonprofit that produces the event.

This year’s show will feature nearly 11,000 pyrotechnic effects, the highest number in the show’s history, according to Michaels, and will run for 24 minutes. The theme is “Go Forward Detroit.”

“Detroit is on a roll,” Michaels said. “Every single day you’re seeing wonderful progress in our city, so it seemed like the perfect theme for this year.”

Pennsylvania-based Zambelli Fireworks provides the pyrotechnics. Patrick Brault will again be the choreographer.

Fireworks sponsor Ford Motor Co. is offering the first 1,000 cars on Belle Isle — a popular spot for fireworks viewing — on Monday a free recreation passport, good for admission to Belle Isle and all Michigan state parks for one year. The park will be open to vehicle traffic at 2 p.m. with a 3,000 vehicle entrance limit for the night.

Walkers and bicyle riders will be able to enter Belle Isle during the normal operating hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The island will close immediately after the fireworks display.
