Gathering seeks ways to improve health of Detroit residents

Health problems that disproportionally affect Detroit residents are the focus of a gathering at Wayne State University.

The inaugural Mayor’s Summit on Health Equity is Monday and Tuesday at the Detroit university. Health disparity researchers will gather with officials from Detroit’s department of public health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and key community organizations.

The event is led by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson.

In a statement, Duggan says those involved “are working to improve everyday life for Detroiters, and that makes health one of our top priorities.”

Researchers say many diseases and conditions — including pre-term birth, asthma in young children, heart disease, diabetes and HIV — affect Detroiters at higher rates than many other parts of the U.S.
