Washington Township, a part of southeastern Gratiot County, contains agricultural farmland consisting primarily
of dry beans and corn, like much of Gratiot County. This area began with the formation of the town of Pompeii,
named after the one in Italy, which existed as a station on the Toledo, Saginaw & Muskegon, (later Grand Trunk),
Railroad from 1854-1887. This township also contains part of the Maple River State Game Area,
best viewed from US-27 or Co. Rd. #521 - a great place for bird watching.
