Gamalski, a partner in the Business Practice Group of Giarmarco, Mullins & Horton, P.C. in Troy, Michigan and Paul Thursam, an associate in the Group, are Co-Chairs, with ProfessorJacqueline Hand of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, of the Urban Farming Symposium being sponsored by the Law School on May 20, 2011, at 8:00 AM. The Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan is Co-Sponsor of the Symposium along with the Law School. Mr. Gamalski is currently Co-Chairperson of the Section's Continuing Legal Education Committee. Mr. Thursam has moderated roundtables for the Section on Urban Farming and will do so again at the Real Property Law Section Summer Conference in July 2011. The Symposium will benefit from a generous in kind contribution by United Auto Workers which has donated use of the UAW-GM Riverfront Joint Training Center on Atwater Street along the Detroit Riverwalk for the Symposium presentations. The presentations will focus on policy and practical issues related to urban farming and agriculture as part of creative and adaptive re-use of the urban landscape. The Symposium will be open to the public but focused on the legal community and planning communities. Detroit is a laboratory where urban farming is fermenting, evolving and growing. The Symposium is intended to establish a reasoned framework for discussions about the legal and policy issues that should be considered by local units of government and citizens grappling with this dynamic concept.
