The Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public Library present a unique evening of theatre and music on Thursday, October 6, 2011. Remembering Frédéric: A Musical Conversation between Frédéric Chopin and George Sand expressed by pianist Pamela Howland. The performance will be at 7:00 P.M. in the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150 Maumee (at St. Clair) in Grosse Pointe, Michigan 48230. Admission is $20. Remembering Frédéric dramatizes the tortured relationship between the famous Polish composer and the French female writer, whose pseudonym was, George Sand. The writer’s words form the basis for this musical journey in time interspersed with Howland performing Chopin’s music. In the show Pamela Howland, a gifted pianist, conjures Sand talking to Chopin six years after his death. Proceeds from admission sales will benefit the Grosse Pointe Public Library.
Pamela Howland is a gifted pianist who breathes life and vitality into classical music for audiences of any age or background. Vivacious, imaginative, sensitive and just a trifle unconventional, Ms. Howland is a rare classically trained performing artist who thrives as an entertainer. Using the lecture-recital format she honed in her early days as a professor at Wake Forest University, she makes each performance a musical conversation, fashioned to fit the listening level of her audience. She seeks programs that depart from a traditional classical format so that her audiences leave both educated and entertained, having learned something about themselves as well as the music. Trained at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music, where she received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature, she performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. Highlights include numerous recitals in the United States, featured recitals in Paris and Vienna, a tour of Colombia, South America, live solo appearances broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio and National Public Radio in New York and North Carolina, and a special performance/chat with host Fred Child on American Public Media’s Performance Today. She has made guest appearances at the Chautauqua (NY) Institution's Summer Music Festival, and with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, and Wake Forest University Orchestra.
