The Salvation Army asks community to fill shifts across Metro Detroit
The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is seeking volunteer bellringers for this year’s Red Kettle Campaign, celebrating 125 years in Detroit. The Salvation Army is asking metro Detroit residents to head to www.ringbell.org to view openings and help fill shifts as bell ringers this holiday season at hundreds of locations throughout metro Detroit.
The bell-ringing volunteer positions are offered Nov. 11 through Dec. 24 (Sundays excluded), and can be filled by individuals and groups of all sizes. This year, more than 400 red kettles will be placed throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties at Kroger, WalMart, Hiller’s Markets, ACO Hardware, Sam’s Club, JCPenney, Walgreens and other participating sites.
The Red Kettle fundraising campaign relies heavily on volunteer efforts to reach its $8.2 million goal. “As poverty levels rise for the fourth consecutive year in a row, the need for social services continues to increase,” said Major Mark Anderson, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “Volunteers who donate their time to ring a bell are a vital part of helping The Salvation Army feed and shelter the impoverished in our community.” All volunteer opportunities can be found at www.ringbell.org.
Volunteers may log on, pick a preferred location and choose a shift time most convenient for them. Volunteers may sign up for one or more shifts, and will receive a confirmation e-mail prior to the selected date. All monetary gifts collected during the Red Kettle Campaign help to assist local families and individuals in times of need.
These funds help maintain vital human services such as food and shelter for children and adults throughout the year. Founded by William and Catherine Booth in London, England in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. This past year, The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit was involved in providing 3,194,802 million meals and 687,203 nights of shelter for the homeless.
