Clinton Township |
On July 22, 1782 David Zeisberger and his followers founded the first settlement in Clinton Township. He described the site of \"New Gnadenhutten\" in his diary, \"founded on this side of the river a fine place to lay out a town on a height ... between the river and the height, there are many springs with many separate little brooks that flow into the river and have exceedingly good water. The land on the site of the town is so sandy ... the lowlands are very rich with heavy timber. We chose this place before all others for our town site ... heavily laden boats can go even to the fork, a half-mile higher up ... and canoes can go much further. We are glad and thankful to have found such a good and healthy a spot for a town site nothing was lacking. We found traces that long ago an Indian town must have stood on this place.\" |

The village was founded in 1857 by Alex Fraser and was given a post office on June 14, 1860. Fraser and Leonard Scott were the first postmasters. The office was closed on September 13, 1860. For the pioneer settler William McPherson, the post office was renamed McPhersonville, on October 15, 1860 and changed back to Fraser on January 13, 1863. When the Grand Trunk Railroad came through a quarter of a mile from the post office in 1865, its station was named Fraser. Richmond |
Richmond is a rapidly growing city with an estimated population of 5,200 residents and is linked by the I-94 Expressway, M-19, and the Gratiot Avenue corridor to the Detroit/Flint/Port Huron metropolitan areas. The City has seven subdivisions under development, which will add another 2,250 residents to the City within the next few years. Commercial and industrial development are also inthe works. Still, Richmond maintains the cherished serenity of small town living. Although only forty miles north of Detroit and twenty miles southwest of Port Huron, all roads that lead to Richmond are lined with rich farm lands and scenic Michigan landscapes. The Grand Trunk Railroad remains. Its tracks reach west to Pontiac and cities beyond, north or Port Huron and Canada, and south to Detroit and rest of the nation. Ocean lines traveling the St. Clair River, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway are just twenty minutes from Richmond\'s border. Michigan\'s largest airport, the Detroit Metropolitan, is sixty miles away and the St. Clair County Airport is a ten minute drive from the City. It is little wonder that this community, with its access to the world, continues to prosper. |

Romeo |
Romeo is 1.75 square miles in size and is located in northwestern Macomb County on M-53. First called the Hoxey Settlement in 1822, and then later Indian Village, it eventually was given its final name at the suggestion from a Mrs. Laura Taylor, who felt the name should be short, musical, classical and uncommon. Romeo was officially established as a village in 1838. Attractions include the \"Where Art Thou Romeo\" Art walk during the first weekend in October, the Romeo Historical Museum, the Romeo Home Tour during the third weekend in May, the Michigan Peach Festival in September and the Romeo Historical Society\'s Craft Show the first weekend in December. |

Roseville |
When Michigan became a state in 1837, a farming community, which is now Roseville, was made part of Orange Township. Because of strong Irish sentiment, the township\'s name was changed to Erin in 1843. In 1836, William Rose was appointed the areas first postmaster. He established a permanent office in 1840, called the Roseville Post Office, after his father Denison Rose, a hero of the War of 1812. In 1846, a wooden plank tollroad (now known as Gratiot Avenue or M-3) was constructed, connecting the community with Detroit and Mount Clemens. One of the tollgates was located at Gratiot Avenue and Utica Road. The tollgate sign giving \"Rates of Toll\" now hangs in the Library. In 1886, the Erin Township Hall was built at the corner of Gratiot Avenue and 11 Mile Road and was the Town Hall for the present cities of Eastpointe, Roseville, St.Clair Shores and part of Fraser. In 1926, Roseville was incorporated as a village. The old Roseville Municipal Building was constructed in 1929, at Gratiot Avenue and Meier Road. Both the village and township offices were moved into the building. In 1958, the village became the City of Roseville and Arthur Waterman was elected the first mayor. The present municipal building was built in 1974. |

A township goverment was organized in 1827. The settlement of Disco at the crossroads of 24 Mile Road and Van Dyke, began in the 1830s and was a busy community. The 1928 Packard Proving Grounds, an engineering marvel, graces Van Dyke Avenue. |

St Clair Shores |
The area was home to French settlers as early as 1710, at which time it was called L\'anse Creuse. (L\'anse Creuse was also the name of a stop on the now-defunct interurban railroad off of Jefferson Ave near 9 Mile Road, and the name lives on today in the L\'anse Creuse High School in Harrison Twp.) From 1843 until 1911, St. Clair Shores was a part of Erin Township. In 1911, the township\'s name changed to Lake Township. Lake Township still exists, although greatly reduced in area. It now represents only the small portion of the village of Grosse Pointe Shores that lies within Macomb County. Prior to the city\'s incorporation in 1951, St. Clair Shores was recognized as the largest village in the United States. |
