4 Clinton Township

Local Web Sites

On July 22, 1782 David Zeisberger and his followers founded the first settlement in Clinton Township. He described the site of "New Gnadenhutten" in his diary, "founded on this side of the river a fine place to lay out a town on a height ... between the river and the height, there are many springs with many separate little brooks that flow into the river and have exceedingly good water. The land on the site of the town is so sandy ... the lowlands are very rich with heavy timber. We chose this place before all others for our town site ... heavily laden boats can go even to the fork, a half-mile higher up ... and canoes can go much further. We are glad and thankful to have found such a good and healthy a spot for a town site nothing was lacking. We found traces that long ago an Indian town must have stood on this place."

6 Birmingham

Birmingham Web Links

The formal settlement of the area now known as Birmingham occurred over 180 years ago. The pioneer story of this small Michigan community began when four enterprising families purchased the first parcels totaling 640 acres of land in 1818. They included Elijah Willits, Benjamin Pierce, John Hamilton and John West Hunter. Hunters were the first permanent residents building their log cabin during the winter of 1819. By 1890s long-time residents who had been lobbying for many improvements began to see better roads, the opening of the interurban street car lines, the establishment of paid fire department, clean water supply and for a new public library. These improvements, along with others made Birmingham a very acquaint but highly desirable place to live. In 1933, the growth in population driven in part by the mobility of the automobiles led to the incorporation of Birmingham as a city. Today, Birmingham's business district and residential areas still enjoy many of the small town charm that characterized days gone by.

Commerce Web Links

Commerce Township is a charter township in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 34,764 at the 2000 census. The terrain is rolling hills but there are large expanses of flat land on which farms and, more recently, subdivisions are built. The Huron River runs mostly north-south through the township. Commerce was formerly a weekend and summer resort for Detroiters because of the area's small inland lakes and peaceful seclusion, but due to recent development the cottages are now all permanent homes. There has been a sharp increase in population in the last few years, mostly on or near the several lakes and golf courses. Much of Proud Lake State Recreation Area is within the township. The northern terminus of Michigan State Highway 5 is in Commerce. The busy highway would have continued north to I-75, but because of the area's high property value and the many lakes that dot the landscape such a project would have been far too costly. Commerce Township shares borders with West Bloomfield, White Lake, Milford Township, Walled Lake, Wolverine Lake, Novi, and Wixom.

Birmingham prospered and grew while Franklin, bypassed by the rail line and removed from any major roads, settled back into a quiet existence. Franklin businesses continued to serve the scattered farms around Southfield Township. For other items, people had to travel by horse and wagon to Pontiac, two hours away. Major civic improvements in this period included the addition of an outdoor swimming pool and an ice rink in Major Park (now known as Shepherd Park, after former mayor David Shepherd, but long known informally as Oak Park Park). Oak Park is home to six of the steel and ceramic houses built by the Lustron company in the early 1950s, which provided an inexpensive type of shelter for servicemen returning from World War II. They can be found on Oneida St., just North of 9 Mile road. Oak Park grew into a quiet city of one-story houses, sidewalks, trees, and backyards. When they left, Captain Moses Porter took possession of Fort Detroit. General Arthur St. Clair was appointed the first governor. In January 1805, Congress passed an act for the organization of the Territory of Michigan. In 1813, Colonel Lewis Cass was appointed third governor and he formed the boundaries of Oakland County in 1819. Waterford became a township in 1834 and in 1837 Michigan became a state.

Today it is known as the world's traditional automotive center and an important source of popular music—legacies celebrated by the city's two familiar nicknames, Motor City and Motown. The city ultimately gets its name from the Detroit River, which in turn derives from the French, "Rivière du Détroit," literally, the "River of the Strait." The name alludes to the connection the river forms between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, although it is not literally a strait.

Redford is a charter township in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 51,622 at the 2000 census. The township had initially been created as Richland Township by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature October 20, 1829, along with Lima Township out of Bucklin Township. However, the legislature overlooked legislation it had passed earlier on April 12, 1827, that prohibited the incorporation of any new township with the same name as any existing post office. Governor Lewis Cass returned the acts unapproved, citing a conflict under the law. The legislature thus had to substitute the names of Nankin Township and Pekin Township after the cities of Nanking and Peking in China. The name Pekin was changed to Redford in 1833. The name Redford was chosen because French fur trappers forded the Rouge river in the same area as Redford. Thus, the name Rouge-"Red"-Ford.
