The city motto is "The Place To Be." During the 1700s, the area was inhabited by the people of a Pottawatomi Indian village. Once restored, the mill was used to make stencils for Ford car parts. Named Nankin Mills, this historic site is now used as a nature interpretive center and other community events.

Redford

Redford Web Links

Redford is a charter township in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 51,622 at the 2000 census. The township had initially been created as Richland Township by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature October 20, 1829, along with Lima Township out of Bucklin Township. However, the legislature overlooked legislation it had passed earlier on April 12, 1827, that prohibited the incorporation of any new township with the same name as any existing post office. Governor Lewis Cass returned the acts unapproved, citing a conflict under the law. The legislature thus had to substitute the names of Nankin Township and Pekin Township after the cities of Nanking and Peking in China. The name Pekin was changed to Redford in 1833. The name Redford was chosen because French fur trappers forded the Rouge river in the same area as Redford. Thus, the name Rouge-"Red"-Ford.

The first settlers arrive in 1825, and named the township in honor of the first American settlement at Plymouth Rock where some of them had lived. The Plymouth area, which includes both the City of Plymouth and the Township of Plymouth is reminiscent of a New England village. Kellogg Park with its shade trees and beautiful fountain in the center of downtown Plymouth even doubles as the town common. Plymouth sees itself as "fun, but not stuffy", both classic and contemporary, as it provides the feeling of living in a small town with diverse cultural and recreational activities, shopping, business and industry.

Highland Park

Highland Park was still a rural farming community north of Detroit in the early 1900s when Henry Ford chose the community as site for his first great factory. Built east of Woodward Avenue, the Ford plant marked the early emergence of the moving assembly line process for which Ford became famous. It was here in Highland Park, in this "birthplace of mass production," that Ford produced millions of Model T cars. And it was to Highland Park that tens of thousands of immigrants came for an unprecedented $5-a-day wage and a chance to enter the emerging middle class.

Other subdivisions followed, but the 1929 Depression brought the area back to virtual wilderness. The subdivisions began again in 1934, and a solid, home-owning community developed. It was renamed from its being in a heavily wooded area and from its then main thoroughfare, Harper Avenue. Harper Avenue, which begins in Detroit, was named for Walter Harper, founder of Harper Hospital, in Detroit. This area was incorporated as a city in 1951.
