TC To Partner With Detroit Institute of Arts On Public Art Program

High-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts collection will be on display at locations throughout Traverse City this summer thanks to a new partnership between the city and the museum.

The DIA’s Inside/Out program loans artwork reproductions to communities at no cost for display in outdoor venues. The museum, which covers the pieces under its own insurance, requires only that the art is displayed at sites that can be comfortably accessed by the public and are within biking or walking distance of one another.

Traverse City will receive 12 pieces, with proposed city-owned locations for display to include the American Legion Park, the farmers market near the Boardman River pedestrian bridge, the Clinch Park concessions building, the Traverse City Fire Department and the Crooked Tree Arts Center. The Downtown Development Authority and Traverse City Arts Commission are also working with several downtown business owners on agreements to display artwork on the exteriors of their buildings.

Artwork installation is proposed for May 19-20. Traverse City commissioners are set to execute an agreement with the DIA for the program at their 7pm meeting Monday at the Governmental Center.
