LookUpDetroit Invite – skb

Dear Metro Detroit Christian,

MainstreamCheck out the Billboard. HONK? How effective could that be? Can we find some better ways to share our lives and values with our neighbors? Could we be more positive and constructive? Or are we just stuck in the many battles of the “Culture Wars”?

“Christianity has arguably added more value to American culture than any other religion, philosophy, ideology or community. Yet, contemporary Americans are hard pressed to identify any specific value added. Partly due to the nature of today’s media, they have no problem identifying the faults of the churches and Christian people.” – from the Barna Research Group

ProphetEven in the 8th-century, b.c. we see a similar “media” problem, history does repeat itself, reading from the Prophet Isaiah:

Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter. Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. – Is 59:14-15

“Truth has stumbled in the public squares” LookUpDetroit.com has been designed as a nonprofit, ad free, online “public square” that everyone (almost 4 million people) in our metro area can use and enjoy, regardless of their faith or lack of faith. We can easily pass on family-friendly, good news from our own neighborhoods, 1000’s of helpful web links and also share our own stories, events and activities.

“Christians need to get out of the pews and into the public square, showing the world a better way.” Chuck Colson – Author, Founder of Prison Fellowship

We can do much more than HONK ! Together – online, we can be “THE MEDIA” and provide a “PUBLIC SQUARE”. As Metro Detroit Christians and churches we can flex our muscles and minds toward making an astoundingly positive community impact. Think what we could do if we all started serving together! Our neighbors deserve a better view of Christians, beyond the television evangelist pleading for money or the various pictures they are given by the some of our mainline media.

Jesus says,
You are the salt of the earth … You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Then the people will LOOK UP to the one who made them.
Their eyes will see the Holy One of Israel. – Isaiah 17:7

“The concept is to create a site based on the local community …. The site must offer the best secular links for the community in a range of categories. It must be a genuinely useful resource at this level.” – from the Web Evangelism Website

… the LORD said to Abram, “From the place where you are standing,
Look Up
and gaze to the north, south, east, and west … – Genesis 13:14

Can you envision the value of this “Public Square Website” as a tool to serve the wider community and to share our stories and witness with others? To really be effective as Christian witnesses and provide service to the wider community, some of the walls and denominational divisions between us need to be put aside. Jesus prays that His followers be one, as He and the Father are one, that the world may know him as Lord and Savior. (John 17:20-21)

The LookUpDetroit Project gives us all an opportunity to use this shared media platform. We are just now inviting you and others to join us, but we are off to a good start with 44,000 visitors to the site last month. Even a few Christian churches, businesses, community groups, young people, ministries, professionals and other individuals joining this outreach effort in each of our counties will build an wider audience and make a powerful impact.

” The Christian church has only done embryonic thinking in this area (culture). When it comes to culture, most Christians know nothing but a privatized faith or a militant, belligerent faith.” – Timothy Keller – New York City Pastor and Author

Please pass the SALT and be a LIGHT, one story at a time … LookUpDetroit.com/blog makes it easy and effective.

Stories BlogThere’s more … LookUpDetroit.com/blog is a Metro Blog, and there is a real advantage to publishing 100’s of family-friendly stories here. A shared – collaborative blog can reach out to each neighborhood and social networks in powerful ways.

According to Wikipedia the top ten weblogs are all collaborative blogs. This should come as no surprise, the more bloggers there are the higher the number of posts, and the content will be far more fresh, varied and ranked high by the search engines. Together we can offer some thought leadership, we can become known as a “Go To” source for helpful community information and family-friendly local web links.

“It is not enough to condemn, critique, copy, or just consume culture. The only way to change culture is to create culture.” – Andy Crouch – Christian Author

We have an open door for local Christians, churches, professionals, artists, writers, photographers, businesses, videographers, charities and ministries.

There are dozens of advantages to post on our LookUpDetroit metro blog and then start sharing each post though social networks and email. Entries on Twitter (we only get 140 characters), Facebook (our entries disappear quickly) and other social networks (not great for search engines) can be helpful, but are most powerful when they include external links to online blog articles.

We don’t want to just share with “friends” or get our messages out to “followers”. We need our own Public Square to serve and reach out to any and all of our metro neighbors. Sharing good news from each of our Metro Detroit communities is not hard, it’s easy and effective. What an exciting, community friendly, fun activity for young people, churches, local organizations, businesses and community groups.

“I think it’s disingenuous that magazines like Newsweek know that their circulation goes up at Christmas and Easter if they put a spiritual issue on the cover, but it’s always bait and switch. They never tell the stories of what good the church is doing.” – Pastor Rick Warren

Neighborly Communications and Compassion

. . . Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in word and deed before God and all the people … – Luke 24:19

Mighty in word and deed … communication and compassion. Let’s also showcase our many Metro Detroit Ministries and Outreach Organizations serving the needy. What a blessing to be able to highlight their activities and help them recruit volunteers and support. LookUpDetroit is here to link people to their websites, cover their events, and showcase their stories.

This is a BIG MEDIA PROJECT that will take TEAMWORK in each Metro Detroit community.
