More than $1.5M awarded to metro Detroit after-school providers

A youth-driven funding initiative called Generator-Z awarded grants totaling $4 million dollars to 93 after-school providers across southeast Michigan and western New York.

Among those selected, 37 are organizations and programs located in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. They received more than $1.5 million in grants.

The grants will support projects and needs that the groups proposed, including stipends, transportation, fellowship projects and resources.Grants range from $10,000 to $100,000.

With many grant-making foundations refocusing their grants in response to COVID-19, some after-school providers have had to look elsewhere for funding. That’s the case for the Detroit Food Academy, a nonprofit that offers programs for Detroit students to learn about culinary arts and food entrepreneurship.
