The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a leading nonprofit dedicated to supporting first responders and veterans, is making significant strides in addressing veteran homelessness with its new Detroit Veterans Village project. Located in Southfield, Michigan, the facility will transform the former Holiday Inn Express & Suites into a 98-unit housing complex for veterans experiencing homelessness. With a groundbreaking ceremony held on October 22, 2024, this initiative marks the foundation’s first project in Michigan, aiming to provide not just shelter but comprehensive support services to the local veteran community.
The renovated building will include on-site resources such as job training, access to medical care, mental health services, and addiction treatment. This holistic approach is designed to help veterans transition to stable, independent lives by providing the tools they need to overcome personal and financial challenges. The services will also include benefits assistance, education support, and PTSD counseling, addressing the unique needs of those who have served in the military.
The Detroit Veterans Village project is part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s broader mission to combat veteran homelessness across the United States. The foundation has already made a significant impact, housing over 6,500 veterans in its existing programs. By expanding its efforts to Michigan, the foundation hopes to continue its work of providing safe, secure, and supportive environments for those who have sacrificed for the country.
With renovations slated to begin in early 2025 and the project expected to open later in the year, the Detroit Veterans Village promises to be a beacon of hope for veterans in need. As the foundation expands its network of Veterans Villages across the country, the Detroit initiative will serve as a model for how communities can rally together to support their veterans and ensure they receive the care and respect they deserve.
