Detroit was Smoking in the 1800s

Detroit, Michigan had a thriving cigar industry in the late 1800s. The city was home to many cigar factories and tobacco shops, and cigars were a popular item among the city’s working-class population. The industry was particularly strong in the 1860s and 1870s, when Detroit was experiencing rapid growth and expansion. Immigrants from Europe, including many from cigar-making countries such as Germany and Poland, brought their skills to the city and helped establish the industry. The cigar industry declined in Detroit in the early 20th century, as the rise of cigarette smoking and automation made cigar-making less profitable.
