H&M to open Nov. 21 in downtown Detroit

Hennes & Mauritz Inc. — better known as H&M — is opening its downtown Detroit location at noon Nov. 21.

The Swedish retailer has 25,000 square feet across three Albert Kahn-designed buildings owned by Dan Gilbert at 1505, 1515 and 1529 Woodward between John R and Park Avenue.

Construction has been ongoing this year since details of the store were revealed in March.

It will employ about 20.

H&M joins the likes of Nike, Under Armour, John Varvatos, Lululemon, Bonobos and other national retailers downtown, all of which have opened in Gilbert properties in the last several years.

“This global brand will fit perfectly with the local businesses, tech companies, startups and fellow fashion industry leaders that already call Woodward home,” Matt Cullen, CEO of Gilbert’s Bedrock LLC real estate company, said in a statement: “This is an important next step in Detroit’s evolution as a destination for shopping, entertainment, dining and doing business.”

The store will be open 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.

Detroit-based Sachse Construction worked on the project. Questions about other contractors and anticipated sales were sent to an H&M spokesman.

H&M says it employs more than 177,000 worldwide.
