Traditions this year amid the coronavirus pandemic have been thrown out the window, but Detroit’s annual Thanksgiving Parade will go on — without thousands of people cheering from along the route.
The city’s chief public health officer, Denise Fair, ordered the century-old event “to be done virtually” given a three-week set of restrictions that include barring outdoor gatherings of more than 25 that took effect last week.
It was announced in September that the parade would travel on Woodward Avenue for TV viewing, but spectators would not be allowed to line the parade route to watch as in the past.
America’s Thanksgiving Parade, produced by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Parade Co., is broadcast by WDIV-TV Channel 4 and includes a one-hour syndicated national broadcast reaching more than 185 markets across the country. WJR 760-AM and WOMC 104.3 will also broadcast special parade shows.
This year’s virtual parade, presented by Gardner White, will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday with “recorded and live elements,” according to WDIV.
The televised-only event will feature new floats as well as annual favorites including balloons, Distinguished Clown Corps, Big Heads, marching bands, and of course, Santa Claus.
