The annual Murals in the Market festival has been officially rebranded as Murals in Islandview, and a string of colorful works are now visible along Beaufait Street between Charlevoix Street and E. Vernor Highway on Detroit’s east side.
The festival, hosted by 1XMurals, took place for the past six years in the Eastern Market neighborhood, where 1XMurals was headquartered until 2018, when they relocated to Islandview.
1XMurals cofounder Roula David explained that as new developers purchased properties in Eastern Market, the shape of the neighborhood began to change, leading the group to consider other areas where the mural project might be more beneficial.
