DeRoy Testamentary Foundation awards $20,000 grant to Pewabic Pottery

The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation recently awarded Pewabic Pottery a grant of $20,000 to support Pewabic’s program “The Science of Ceramics”, and its continued instruction to underserved minority youth seeking careers in science and engineering through the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP).

DAPCEP helps students develop the motivation, awareness and skills necessary for academic achievement and successful careers. Student problem solving skills are developed with the use of technology, aiding in the supply of cognitive skills that any student needs as a basis for successful comprehension of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) subjects.

Pewabic’s DAPCEP class, Ceramic Engineering: High Tech from the Stealth Bomber to Tennis Balls, is an interactive course for middle school age students that focuses on the fundamental and environmental factors affecting the material of clay. Ceramic engineering classes at historic Pewabic Pottery are filled with amazing experiments using the fun clay material. Using math and science, and a little bit of art, students learn how many cool things are made with this simple material. Students learn about ceramic use, such as its kind and type, vitrified states, glaze chemistry, their characteristics and applications, working with relevant equipment for analysis and fabrication.

Pewabic youth education programs are offered free to Detroit youth in public and charter schools, offering opportunities for quality after-school programs for youth that take place in healthy, safe and supportive environments. These programs teach life skills using ceramic arts while supporting creative self-expression, career exploration for youth, and helping participants develop self-confidence. Pewabic also teaches 1,000 adults each year through varied courses from beginner to advanced levels.

Pewabic Pottery is a non-profit arts and cultural organization and National Historic Landmark which is dedicated to engaging people of all ages in learning experiences with contemporary ceramic art and artists while preserving its historic legacy.

Pewabic is a historic working pottery which is open to the public year round and offers classes, workshops and tours to children and adults. Pewabic creates giftware, pottery and architectural tile, showcases more than 80 ceramic artists in its galleries, and operates a museum store that features pottery and gift tile made on-site. Visitors are welcome, free of charge, Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. To learn more about Pewabic Pottery call (313) 626-2000 or visit www.pewabic.org.
