What Matt Prater has done in Detroit is nuts. What Matt Prater thinks he can still do is unprecedented

No man has ever kicked a 65-yard field goal in a game. But Matt Prater thinks he can do it.

Yes, that Matt Prater. Who turns 36 years old on Monday.

“I definitely think I could,” the Detroit Lions place kicker said in a video call this week. “I feel really good this year going into it. I feel like I’m in better shape, I feel better, my leg feels really fresh right now.”

If there’s anybody who can do it, it’s Matt Prater. He is, after all, already king of the long ball. He holds the NFL record for longest field goal, a 64-yarder he hit while with Denver in 2013. He’s also made the most 55-yard field goals in a season, plus the most consecutive field goals from 50-plus yards (14), the most consecutive field goals made from 55-plus yards (seven), and so on.
