Historic Detroit marketplace to find third home at Greenfield Village

A building dating back to 19th-century Detroit is about to get its third home.

The Vegetable Building, part of a long-gone marketplace once located near Old City Hall, will be moved to Greenfield Village. While the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the installation, the facility hopes to see the building up by the end of 2021.

Greenfield Village had been raising funds for the building’s reconstruction for years, including this past Giving Tuesday. The project has recently broken ground, finally finishing its fundraising. It has raised over $5 million since the beginning of the project, almost ten years ago.

It’s a rare venture to put up a new building in The Village, said Greenfield Village director Jim Johnson. The last one was in 1999.

“It’s all very exciting for us,” Johnson said.
