Winners of SAE International’s JetToy Olympics Announced

 

DETROIT, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ —  More than 500 elementary students competed for gold at the JetToy Olympics, held April 13 during the SAE 2011 World Congress at the Cobo Center in Detroit.

Supported by the SAE Foundation through sponsorships by Johnson Controls, Inc. and TRW, the JetToy Olympics brought together students who have participated in SAE International’s hands-on, classroom-based, A World In Motion® (AWIM) program. During the competition, teams of four students worked together and used their knowledge from classroom experience to construct balloon-powered JetToys, competing for various distance and accuracy awards.

The grand champion of the JetToy Olympics was team 23 from St. John the Evangelist School of Fenton, Mich.

AWIM brings hands-on science, technology, engineering and math education to students from kindergarten through high school graduation. It is the fifth year for the JetToy Olympics at Cobo Center. In 2010, more than 500 students participated. It is the first year for the Fuel Cell Olympics, a similar event that promotes hands-on education.

The AWIM curriculum is supported by the SAE Foundation. The SAE Foundation will hold its annual banquet on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at The Fillmore Detroit. During the banquet, Industry Leadership Awards will be presented to John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America; and Peter Marks, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Robert Bosch LLC.
